Welcome to PCK Pre-Prep

The essence of a child's future success is fully understood at PCK Preschool. It is here where the teachers’ main role is to develop the roots of each individual child, roots which are firmly planted in the fertile soil of educational excellence. These early years are the vitally formative years of a child's life and our programme is carefully designed to nurture the children during this phase of the learning process.

Within the framework of our 8 core beliefs, our children learn best through hands‐on and age-appropriate activities. The Preschool promotes learning and personal growth in a manner

which respects individual differences. Our teachers provide opportunities for the children to develop physical, social, emotional and cognitive skills in a safe and stimulating environment. Every living thing, every captivating sound and every glinting light means a world of countless hours of exploration and learning. Through these daily opportunities, our young children get to know themselves and develop their unique talents and abilities.

Some people call it play, but to our children and our teachers it is more important and significant than that. This is where life at school begins, where children are encouraged to explore,

investigate, discover and gather the tools they need to excel in their future years of education.

Arrival

Children can be dropped at school from 7:00am. The assistants will receive your child in their classroom.

Should you need to drop your child earlier, morning care is provided and children can be dropped at the Pre-Primary from 6:30am. The children are then accompanied by the assistant to their classroom when school starts.

The first lesson begins at 8:00am

Indoor Play

The classroom will be set up with a number of morning free play activities. Indoor free play allows children to develop:

  • Fine motor skills
  • Social relationships
  • Creative thinking
  • Language
  • Perception
  • Risk taking

Tidy up

This encourages responsibility and co-operation and is also a learning skill as children sort and classify.

Orientation Ring

Children are encouraged to learn to listen and to sit. This is teacher directed. Children are welcomed and songs are sung. Discussion around the inquiry and investigation takes place during this time.

INTEGRATED CURRICULUM LEARNING

This model encourages children start to think for themselves, access abstract thought and come up with their own answers to questions, thereby constructing their own knowledge and solutions to problems.  It immerses them in a learning style that will equip them for future thinking and discovering. This involves collaboration, research and formulating one's own learning with facilitation as opposed to formal teaching.

ICM works on constructs, concepts, inquiry units and  immersion. It includes, art, science, music, movement, perception, baking and language building. Children are immersed in the basic concepts needed for later more formal schooling.

It ensures differentiation within a classroom and allows each child to work at their own pace and at their own level with the teacher guiding them to move to the next level.

The curriculum is also scaffolded so that each grade learns at their level and as the child moves up to the next group, they are extended.

The investigations are grouped into 3-4 week intervals which allow the children a proper grasp of

the concepts and skills being offered.

Meals

We encourage independence with eating. Children take turns and are given the opportunity to be the servers. The school provides breakfast, lunch and 1 snack daily. We limit the amount of sugar our children receive.

Outdoor Play

This is essential for large muscle development, hand eye-co-ordination, creative play, sensory play, problem solving, confidence, socialization and independence. Different equipment is put out every day which the children can engage with and be challenged by.

Story and Drama

Stories develop grammar, syntax and vocabulary. They  encourage listening and relaxation as well as imagination and critical thought.

Rest Time

Each child rests on the mattress provided. Each child should bring their own pillows and blankets which will be sent home once a week for washing.

Digital Literacy

The Grade 0s attend Digital Literacy classes where the Resolute Digital Literacy and Robotics Programme is adhered to. As part of the Computational Thinking and Programming part of the syllabus, the children use iPads, Bee Bots and laptops computers. They learn about the initial stages of coding and how to control and operate these devices.

All children in the Pre-Preparatory participate in a Physical Development lesson offered by Tumbline Tigerz. Grade 000, 00 and 0 children take part in swimming lessons once a week (during the summer months), as we believe swimming is an essential life skill.

Academic Support

We have an in-house Play Therapist, Speech Therapist and Occupational Therapist (Qualified in Sensory Integration). The team including teachers and parents work together to address any challenges your child may face.
